The Okada Who Knows Every Shortcut in Lagos — Street Skit

Two Lagos men riding an okada motorcycle through chaotic shortcut routes across Lagos mainland, including compounds, football fields, school gates, and markets. The rider looks confident while the passenger looks terrified, with bold comic-style text highlighting funny Lagos traffic humor and the journey to Ikeja.

The Lagos okada man has developed a personal map of the city that exists nowhere else — a network of shortcuts, back routes, unofficial paths, and absolute certainties about where a motorcycle can and cannot go. Spoiler: the motorcycle can apparently go everywhere.

🎭 Characters

  • Rider Segun — Has been riding Lagos since 2007 and knows a route nobody in the world would call a route
  • Passenger — Is late for something important and becoming less certain this was a good idea

📍 Setting

Lagos mainland. The passenger needs to get to Ikeja. Traffic is impossible. Segun knows "a way."

📜 Full Dialogue

Passenger: Ikeja fast, oga. I have a meeting at three—

Segun: (already moving) Ikeja no problem. I know shortcut.

Passenger: Okay, which way?

Segun: You will see.

[Segun turns off the main road onto a dirt path. Then through a residential street. Then through what appears to be someone’s front yard.]

Passenger: …Are we going through someone’s compound?

Segun: This man allows it. We have an arrangement.

Passenger: An arrangement with a homeowner to use his compound as a road?

Segun: Community infrastructure.

[They emerge onto another road. Then Segun turns onto a football field.]

Passenger: (gripping tighter) This is a football pitch.

Segun: Currently not in use.

Passenger: There are children playing on it!

Segun: We are going around the edge. Not through the game. I have respect.

[Through a school back gate. Past a market perimeter. Through a car park. Then — the main Ikeja road.]

Segun: Ikeja. We are here.

Passenger: (getting off, slightly shaking) How… how long have you known this route?

Segun: Seven years. I discovered it by accident.

Passenger: What kind of accident?

Segun: I was running from traffic police.

Passenger: (pause) And you have used it since?

Segun: Best route in Lagos. Nothing beats necessity as a teacher.

[Passenger pays, shakes head, walks away.]

Segun: (calling after him) Same time tomorrow? I know an even faster way!

🎬 Acting Tips

  • Segun should be utterly confident on every terrain — this is his office.
  • "Community infrastructure" should be said as if this is an official term.
  • "I have respect" when going around the football game is a genuinely honourable line.
  • The traffic police origin story should be delivered as a proud founding myth.

📷 Camera Ideas

  • GoPro-style footage from the passenger's perspective on the bike.
  • Wide shots of the football field, compound, school gate — the full route.
  • Passenger's increasingly wide eyes as each location passes.
  • Final Ikeja arrival shot — triumphant and absurd.

🔊 Suggested Sound Effects

  • Okada engine sounds
  • Football match ambient sounds
  • School bell in background
  • City traffic when they emerge on main road

📱 TikTok Caption Ideas

  3. "Nothing beats necessity as a teacher. Lagos wisdom just casually dropped. 🏍️"
  4. "He respects the football game by going around the edge. Boundaries. 😭"
  5. "Seven years of this route and he is sharing it. The okada economy. #LagosLife"

🔀 Alternative Ending

Alternative ending: The passenger is so impressed that he asks Segun to map the entire route. He posts it online. It goes viral. Urban planners study it. Segun is invited to speak at a transportation conference. He says: "Oga, I just know what works."

The Lagos okada rider's mental map is one of the most remarkable things about the city. Send this to everyone who has been taken through a shortcut that involved someone's backyard.
