Nigerian church ushers are a powerful force of spiritual order. They have a seating chart in their head that nobody else can see. They operate a timing system no one taught them. And their silent side-eye has been known to humble even the most defiant latecomer. This skit is their story β and the story of one man who thought he could walk in late and sit anywhere.
- Sister Blessing β Head Usher. Pressed uniform, laminated name badge, clipboard she does not strictly need. Rules are her spiritual gift.
- Brother Kelechi β 32. Late to church. Has a reason. Sister Blessing does not accept reasons.
- Junior Usher Tobi β New. Learning. Terrified of Sister Blessing.
- Pastor (offstage voice) β Preaching powerfully, oblivious to the drama in the lobby.
The church lobby, 10:17 AM. Service started at 10:00. Through the glass doors, the Pastor can be heard preaching. Two ushers stand at the entrance like sentinels.
- Sister Blessing should never raise her voice, never show emotion, and never break her posture. Her power is entirely in stillness and the weight of her gaze.
- Tobi is deeply traumatised but deeply loyal. He whispers like he is afraid Sister Blessing can hear through walls.
- The Pastor’s “THE DOOR IS OPEN” moment: deliver it through a closed door β the irony must land perfectly.
- Kelechi’s final acceptance is key β he should genuinely appreciate Sister Blessing by the end. She has earned that.
- Opening shot: wide shot of lobby, Sister Blessing perfectly positioned at the door.
- Kelechi’s entrance: low angle shooting up at Sister Blessing’s hand stopping him.
- The “look” at the end: extreme close-up on Sister Blessing’s face. Hold. Let the audience feel it.
- Muffled church singing and preaching throughout, heard through glass doors
- Sister Blessing’s clipboard click
- Bench squeak as Kelechi sits down to wait
- Triumphant organ sound when the door finally opens
At the end of service, it turns out Sister Blessing also arrived 17 minutes late. She confesses to Kelechi. Her reason: Lagos traffic. The exact same reason Kelechi gave. They look at each other in silence. “Do not tell anyone,” she says. “I will not,” he says. They are equals now.
