Traffic Hawker vs Impatient Driver — Lagos Skit

The Lagos traffic hawker is one of the most skilled salespeople on earth. They have fifteen seconds when traffic moves, a product for every budget, and the ability to sense exactly which driver is most likely to buy despite claiming they need nothing.

🎭 Characters

  • Emeka (hawker) — Selling plantain chips, phone chargers, and inexplicable conviction
  • Mr. Bankole — Driver — windows up, AC on, "I don't buy from traffic" as a personality trait

📍 Setting

Third Mainland Bridge traffic. 5:30 PM. It has been stationary for twenty minutes. Mr. Bankole's window is almost — almost — up.

📜 Full Dialogue

Emeka: Oga! Plantain chips! Good price! Hundred naira!

Mr. Bankole: (window barely cracked) No. Thank you.

Emeka: (unfazed) Phone charger then? Original, oga. iPhone and Android. Five hundred naira!

Mr. Bankole: I have a charger.

Emeka: Backup charger? For the car? Oga, have you ever been stranded with 2% battery? I have seen it. Very terrible.

Mr. Bankole: I have a power bank.

Emeka: Power bank need charging too. This one charge from cigarette lighter. Self-sufficient, oga.

Mr. Bankole: No.

Emeka: (shifting product) Neck pillow? For this traffic, oga. Very comfortable. Doctor recommend for stress—

Mr. Bankole: A doctor recommended a traffic neck pillow?

Emeka: Not directly but the concept is medically sound.

Mr. Bankole: (unwillingly amused) Are you serious right now?

Emeka: Oga, I have been standing here since four o’clock. The sun is medical. I am serious about everything right now.

[Traffic moves slightly. Emeka moves with it.]

Emeka: Last thing, oga. Plantain chips. One hundred naira. For the hunger that is going to meet you in this traffic before you reach home. You will think of me.

[Mr. Bankole stares at him. Traffic stops again. His stomach growls — slightly audible.]

Mr. Bankole: (lowering window fully) How many do you have?

Emeka: (immediately triumphant) Three packs, oga. Take all three — I give you two-fifty. Bundle deal.

Mr. Bankole: (handing money through window) You are relentless.

Emeka: (counting money, smiling) In Lagos, relentless is a survival skill. Safe drive, oga. God bless.

🎬 Acting Tips

  • Emeka must never seem desperate — he is a professional with a pitch, not a beggar.
  • "The concept is medically sound" should be delivered with complete confidence.
  • Mr. Bankole's stomach growl is the comedic turning point — his body betrayed him.
  • Emeka's final "relentless is a survival skill" should land with genuine dignity.

📷 Camera Ideas

  • Driver's POV from inside the car looking out at Emeka approaching.
  • Window-level camera tracking Emeka moving with the traffic.
  • Close-up on Mr. Bankole's face fighting the chips temptation.
  • The money exchange through the window — intimate, warm.

🔀 Alternative Ending

Alternative ending: Mr. Bankole buys all of Emeka's remaining stock — chips, charger, neck pillow, and a handmade calendar — and drives home. His wife asks why. He says: "He needed to go home." She says: "You are too soft." He says: "He was standing in the sun since four." She nods. They eat the chips.

Lagos traffic hawkers are the most consistent salespeople in Nigeria. They deserve our admiration and at least one impulse purchase. Share this with every driver who said "no" and then reached for their wallet.
