Paying Rent with Apologies — Nigerian Tenant Skit

Paying Rent with Apologies — Nigerian Tenant Skit

There is a type of Nigerian tenant who never pays rent on time but always pays eventually — and always arrives with an explanation so thorough, delivered with such sincerity and warmth, accompanied by something for the landlord's household, that it is somehow impossible to maintain full anger. This is that tenant.

🎭 Characters

  • Chidi — Tenant. Has been late every single month for two years. Every explanation is different. Every one is authentic.
  • Landlord Pa — Who has been expecting this arrival and is prepared to be understanding.

📍 Setting

The compound. Chidi has arrived with an envelope, a bag, and an expression of genuine remorse.

📜 Full Dialogue

Chidi: Pa! Good evening, sir. I come with apologies and some small things for the house.

Landlord Pa: (sighing) Chidi. How many weeks?

Chidi: Three weeks, sir. But I have brought everything today — the full rent plus November—

Landlord Pa: You said November would be on time.

Chidi: (earnestly) Sir, I fully intended it. But my sister called from Enugu—

Landlord Pa: Last month was also your sister.

Chidi: Different situation. This time she needed school fees for the children—

Landlord Pa: How many children does this sister have?

Chidi: Four, sir. And a set of twins that arrived in October.

Landlord Pa: (pause) Twins now?

Chidi: Unexpected. God is blessing the family heavily. I also brought this — the palm oil from my brother’s farm. Fresh. Pressed this month.

[He produces a large bottle of palm oil. The landlord looks at it. He looks at Chidi.]

Landlord Pa: (accepting the oil) The rent — both months?

Chidi: Both months plus. I included 2,000 extra for the inconvenience of waiting.

Landlord Pa: (counting the envelope) Chidi. If you paid on time — you would not need to give extra.

Chidi: I know, sir. It is a cost of my character. I am working on it.

Landlord Pa: (small smile despite himself) It is a cost of your character. Go and sleep. December rent — first of the month.

Chidi: First of the month, sir. On my father’s grave—

Landlord Pa: Your father is alive. I have met him.

Chidi: …On the principle of my father’s eventual grave, sir.

[Landlord Pa goes inside, palm oil in hand, shaking his head, smiling.]

🎬 Acting Tips

  • Chidi should be genuinely warm and genuinely sorry — not performed.
  • The palm oil presentation should be done with real care — it is a real gift.
  • "It is a cost of my character. I am working on it." is his most honest and most charming line.
  • The landlord's walk inside with the oil should be the visual punchline.

📷 Camera Ideas

  • Chidi arriving with the bag and envelope — full character established.
  • The palm oil bottle reveal — warm amber in the evening light.
  • Landlord Pa's "small smile" — this is the whole story.
  • Walk inside with palm oil — final shot.

🔊 Suggested Sound Effects

  • Envelope opening sounds
  • Evening compound ambient sounds
  • Money being counted

📱 TikTok Caption Ideas

  2. "Your father is alive. I have met him. Chidi overextended on the oath. 💀"
  3. "The fresh palm oil from his brother's farm. He came prepared with love. 🫙"
  4. "He pays extra for the inconvenience of waiting. The late rent premium. 😭"

🔀 Alternative Ending

Alternative ending: In December, for the first time in two years, Chidi pays on the first. He brings nothing. No palm oil. No apology. Just an envelope. The landlord opens the door, looks at him, looks at the envelope, looks at him again. He says: "Just the envelope?" Chidi says: "Growth, sir." The landlord says: "I miss the oil."

The tenant who pays late but pays with love is one of the most human characters in Nigerian housing life. Share this with every landlord who has ever been disarmed by a bottle of palm oil.
